Hollis

Hollis’s head was spinning the entire time they made the short drive from the concert to the restaurant. Lost in his thoughts, he hadn’t minded at all when Riley turned up the radio. At least he’d have a few short minutes to think, and to process everything that had just happened.

First, Riley had said something about a date that had caught Hollis completely off guard, and as much as he had tried to keep his reaction normal and his voice steady, he was afraid that Riley could see right through him.

Then, as if he wasn’t already having a difficult time making sense of things, Riley pulled him in for a sort-of-hug, sending him into sensory overload as his body pressed against Riley’s, the intoxicating scent of his cologne mingling with the light, sweet smell of soap that still lingered on his skin and—with his face just inches from Riley’s—reminded Hollis of all the things he missed about being close to someone.

The immediate and resulting erection had made the rest of the walk to the truck an exercise in self-control, since the last thing Hollis had wanted to do was let go. Having Riley’s arm around him, even if it was only for a few seconds, had felt so perfectly right that Hollis had instantly missed it when Riley pulled away again.

And as they arrived at the restaurant, Hollis wondered if he was just torturing himself for no reason.

He didn’t have much time for his thoughts to continue down that path, though, because as soon as they walked through the doorway of the private dining room, he found himself enveloped in a whirlwind of activity and at least a half-dozen conversations at once.

“Hollis!” Riley’s mother exclaimed, once Riley had introduced him. “It’s so good to finally meet you. We’ve heard so much about you.”

He smiled and shook her hand, wondering how much of what she’d heard had come from Riley, and how much had been from idle gossip around town. She seemed warm and inviting, though, so Hollis was happy to give her the benefit of the doubt. Knowing that she had raised three boys that had turned out as well as Riley and his brothers had definitely helped ease Hollis’s mind, though.

Considering where they lived and the prevailing political sentiment in the neighboring counties and states, Riley was remarkably well-informed and open-minded, and those were traits that he had to have picked up somewhere. Hopefully from his parents.

“It’s wonderful to meet you all as well,” Hollis said, taking a seat next to Riley at the long table that had been assembled for Riley’s family, his brother’s band members, and a few other people Hollis didn’t immediately recognize from the show, but assumed were involved backstage in some way or another.

“I have to say, though,” Jean Carhart continued, “I’m glad that Riley has found a job he seems to love, but maybe you can help me talk some sense into him. He’s been home for nearly two months now, and I do wish he’d start thinking about his future a little more.
